Finding the right genealogy forms can sometimes be a frustrating process. It can mean sifting through website after website searching for the one you have in mind.
We have put together a list of free online forms to help save you time with a few of the best ones. Family Search Wiki has a few of my favorites. Misbach’s 6 generation Pedigree Chart for one. This research log is also handy for keeping your research organized. Another research log by the Midwest Genealogy Center can be located on their website. They have a variety of forms including a pedigree chart and coloring page for young children. The Family Unit Chart offered by the Midwest Genealogy Center is two pages and allows for twelve children to be listed.
Family Group Sheets are an interesting animal. There are many available and many different setups. The first one is an electronic Family Group form that you can use in Google Docs or you can print out. The same form is also available in MS Word format. The next Family Group Sheet form was created by the LDS church and has their system for ancestor baptism, endowment, and Sealing to Parents. If you aren’t Mormon, you can just ignore these checkboxes because otherwise the form is well made and thorough. The National Archives is another organization offering a family group sheet online. Their form has two pages and is simple and straightforward. Ancestry.com also offers a one-page family group sheet offered in landscape orientation. The only downfall is you have to write everything in a tiny font because the lines are so close together.
Another ancestral chart from Ancestry.com allows you to print off multiple copies of this pedigree chart to organize all of your ancestors. The chart from the National Archives is nearly identical so I am not listing it here.
I was happy to find Misbach’s free forms as they seemed to have fallen off the Google rankings for a few years, but have very good forms. Their Family Group Sheet is probably my favorite in free forms. If you are looking for decent bowtie and fan charts, they also have those.
Over the many years of researching genealogy, I have found that I have specific requirements for my own forms. Through some trial and error, I have created my own forms when I just can’t find what I am looking for.
I will be adding them to the website in the coming months.
Below is one that I created and have for sale. Many years ago I found a free form online that I was able to print out on an 11×17 sheet of paper. I had this posted on the wall above my computer. It was so helpful as I was able to visually see my entire tree in one single view. The entries were handwritten, so I could just take it down and add another ancestor as my research continued. This was a great system. My form ripped and I couldn’t find another one online, so I created my own. Below is the 7 Generation Pedigree Chart I created.
